No necesitamos tu represa.”

Tuira Kayapo, leader of the indigenous Kayapo tribe, speaks truth to power, to Aloysio Guapindaia, director of the ]Brazilian] National Indian Foundation, FUNAI, in opposition to the Belo Monte dam planne to flood the lands of her people and other Originario peoples along the Xingu river. This is one brave woman. See comments for her earlier confrontation of a corporate lord of a power company attacking her people and land.

“Tuira Kayapo is a mother and Indigenous warrior who showed the world what happens when women take the reins of their own destiny. The world heard about her in 1989 in the Altamira meeting in Brasil against dam building in the Xingu river area. She appeared in the hall wearing war paint, naked and with a large machete, and came up to the president of Brasil’s electric company Petrobras, putting the blade of her machete against his cheek, and declared that her people and the entire Amazon considered the dam as an act of war. She then said, "You are a liar. We don’t need electricity; it isn’t going to provide our food [as the river does]. We need our rivers to flow free: our future depends on it. We need our forests to hunt and gather in. We don’t need your dam.”

my dad had a skype interview today so he was sitting in the living room looking all professional in his suit and tie and everything while he’s talking to the people who are interviewing him. and OF COURSE my cat decided that she NEEDED to speak at that moment so she just starts meowing left and right and talking crazy talk to the point where the interviewers just start laughing because she just will NOT shut up. so my dad just kind of sighs, looks at the camera, and goes, “i’m so sorry. i have to ask my cat to leave.” and then he looks over at victoria and very calmly and professionally goes, “victoria, i’m afraid you’re being too loud, and i’m going to have to ask you to leave.”

and she did. she fucking turned and walked out of the living room.
